Protodiplatyidae. Protodiplatyidae is an extinct family of earwigs. It is one of three families in the suborder Archidermaptera, alongside Dermapteridae and Turanovia. Species are known from Jurassic and Early Cretaceous fossils [3] [4] and have unsegmented cerci and tarsi with four to five segments. [4]This new family, characterized by an unexpected combination of primitive and derived characters, is bridging the missing link between suborders of Archidermaptera and Eodermaptera. Phylogenetic analyses support the new family to be a new clade at the base of previously defined Eodermaptera and to be a stem group of (Eodermaptera+Neodermaptera). In addition, it necessitates the same pattern of convergence in terms of the occurrence of multi-segmented cerci in nymphs of Archidermaptera and Eodermaptera, and then once again reappearing in the Diplatyidae, Karchiellidae, and Haplodiplatyidae. Indeed, a large number of morphological homoplasies arise from such a hypothesis.

It also shows that the more "modern" Forficulina did not take over at once but co-existed with the "ancient" Archidermaptera. The suborder was erected by Bey-Bienko in 1936.

These traits do not apply to the earliest earwigs, however, since basal, extinct members of the order - traditionally classified in the paraphyletic suborder Archidermaptera - all exhibited five-segmented tarsi, well-developed ovipositors, veined tegmina, and segmented cerci (Willmann, 1990, Haas and Klass, 2003, Grimaldi and Engel, 2005).Klaufhalar (eyrnaormar eða eyrnapöddur) (fræðiheiti: Dermaptera) eru ættbálkur skordýra af útvængju yfirættbálki sem einkennist af stórum himnu vængjum (afturvængjum) sem klaufhalarnir brjóta saman undir leðurkennda framvængi. With about 2,000 species in 12 families, they are one of the smaller insect orders. Earwigs have characteristic cerci, a pair of forcep-like pincers on their abdomen, and membranous wings folded underneath short, rarely used forewings, hence the scientific order name, "skin wings".
